Thanks to a Veteran’s Affairs urgent care program introduced in 2019, many Veterans in the Palm Bay, Florida area, can now receive walk-in services at Restore Health Urgent Care. VA benefits were expanded to allow Veterans enrolled in the VA health care system to visit a civilian urgent care provider for free without an appointment in certain cases.

This program also means expanded access to certain other medical services. This includes improved access to medications prescribed by non-VA physicians, as well as maintaining copayment rates with community physicians. Effective on June 6, 2019, the program is a component of the Department of Veterans Affairs’ Mission Act.

Today we’re going to discuss how to use your VA benefits at urgent care. But first, we’ll cover some other important information about veterans’ health benefits.

Veterans Health Benefits

Those who have served in the US military may be eligible for certain health benefits if they didn’t receive a dishonorable discharge or if they served on active duty. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) runs the program. Besides the urgent care access we mentioned, benefits can include:

  • Inpatient and outpatient care at VA facilities
  • Mental health care
  • Women veterans health care
  • Prescription drugs from VA providers
  • Long-term care
  • Community health care if the VA cannot provide the necessary treatment or services

This coverage depends on certain conditions, availability, and eligibility. We encourage veterans to learn about the specific coverage they are eligible for so they can take advantage of the care that’s available to them.

As an urgent care center in the Palm Bay area, we’re eager to educate the public about the medical care options available to them. Additionally, we are a proud VA Authorized Urgent Care facility under the VA Mission Act.

Whether Restore Health Urgent Care is your local VA medical facility or not, here’s how to use your VA benefits at urgent care.

How to use your VA benefits at Urgent Care

Who can visit an urgent care center in the VA’s network?

  1. a) A veteran enrolled in the VA health care system, and
  2. b) A veteran who has seen a VA doctor or a civilian doctor (under the VA Choice program) within the last 24 months

When you arrive at the VA medical facility, inform the staff right away that you intend to use your VA benefits. In non-life threatening situations, an urgent care clinic will verify your eligibility before administering treatment. If you are experiencing a serious or life-threatening illness or injury, seek emergency care as opposed to urgent care.

What happens if you’re not eligible for coverage but you still proceed with treatment?

In that case, you’re responsible for the cost.

It’s important to declare your intent to use VA benefits so a medical facility can inform you if they’re part of the VA’s contracted network. If they’re not, your medical treatment and associated costs won’t be covered.

But, even if your bill is covered, you may receive a separate bill from the VA for your copayment. Copays depend on a few things, including your assigned priority group and how many times you’ve used your VA benefits within a calendar year.

At most facilities, you’ll only have to verify your eligibility one time. Would you like to determine your eligibility before making the trip to urgent care? Call the VA at 866-606-8198, or contact your regular VA medical office. If you’re at an urgent care center and having difficulty receiving care or need help, call 866‑620‑2071.
